Mental health disorders and Physical activities
Mrs x is a 57 years old from Ondo town with a history of moderate mental disorder (depression). The patient is referred to me for physical activities programmes.
Solution: The exercises programme should put the following into consideration:

1. Mode/type of physical activity the following exercises should be considered :walking, (including brisk type) swimming, bicycling, gardening, cleaning up the compound, washing cars,engaging in other household chores,jogging,rebounding and stretching.
2. Frequency of the physical activity :Here you consider how many times a week will this activity be carried out. It is advisable to be at least in terms of days of the week :Monday, Wednesday and Friday/Saturday.
3. Duration of the physical activity :Thirty minutes of moderate exercise daily. It could be 30 minutes a session. And the activity could be for a specified period of about 12 weeks or all the year round.
4. Intensity of the physical activity :physical activity that will raise the body temperature to the point of sweating will definitely be beneficial to those with mental disorders.
5. Principles of physical activity :Here you considered principles of overload, specificity, individualism and gradualism/progression. Physical activity for the people with mental health disorders should be individualized and gradual or in progression that is from simple to complex.

Mental health is everyone's business,therefore individuals, families, employers, educators, communities, and health professional organizations all need to play their parts. Adequate mental health is fundamentals to our physical health,our training, our work and to achieving our life potentials. Mental health disorders manifest themselves in different ways at different ages professionals and other stakeholders in the field of mental health have a role to play in the promotion of physical activities in the management and care of the individuals with mental health disorders through working together to better manage mental health and well-being of affected individuals.

Physical activity improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression,bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychoses, dementia and developmental disorders including autism.

Research shows that people who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional well being and lower rates of mental illness. Exercise releases chemicals like endorphins and serotonin that improve your mood. If you exercise regularly, it can reduce your stress and symptoms of mental health conditions like depression and anxiety and help with recovery from mental health issues. Exercise helps your brain get rid of chemicals that make you feel stressed and anxious.
